ADULT FAITH ENRICHMENT FOR ADVENT Film- Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas) For the season of Advent, we will consider the themes of hope, peace, joy, and love through the lens of one Christmas Eve in 1914 with the world at war. We will be viewing and discussing the film ‘Joyeux Noel’. It was an Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film. Joyeux Noel is a fictionalized account of a true-life story. On Christmas Eve 1914 a truce was declared by Scottish, French and German troops in the trenches of World War I. The German theologian Johann Baptist Metz, called this story a “dangerous memory”: one that inspires resistance, challenges the narrative of hate, dehumanization, and the inevitability of war. Accounts of the Christmas truce were suppressed by each nation’s governments and military leaders, and were aggressively discouraged for the remainder of the war. The film will be shown in 2 parts in the Parish Hall. Part 1- Thursday night December 5th at 7PM and Friday Morning December 6th at 10 AM Part 2- Thursday night December 12th at 7PM and Friday Morning December 13th at 10 AM **This is an adult themed film Rated PG-13 for scenes of war violence and some adult themes. SERVICE OF COMPLINE-NIGHT PRAYER Compline is an ancient office with which monastic communities end their day of prayer. It is the final prayer of the day before bed. Compline is a service of quietness and reflection. As one author writes, “Compline speaks to God in the dark”. The service invites us during this busy holiday season to end the day in community, in prayer, and in peace. The service will be held Thursday December 19th at 7PM in the church. All are welcome!
